Renting a villa in Bali

Is a 2-Bedroom Villa the Right Size?

A 2-bedroom villa in Bali suits a couple expecting occasional guests, two friends sharing, or a small family, and is often a smaller price step up from a 1-bedroom than people expect.

A 2-bedroom villa in Bali is the size that works for the widest range of trips: a couple wanting a spare room for guests or a home office, two friends or a small family sharing, or a couple who simply wants more separation between the bedroom and living areas than a studio-style villa gives. It’s the most flexible size in most villa portfolios, ours included.

The main decision at this size isn’t just “how many people” but whether the second bedroom needs to be genuinely private — with its own bathroom and some separation from the main room — or whether an open, connected layout is fine.

What a 2-bedroom villa typically includes

Across our own villas, 2-bedroom properties range from stylish pool townhouses to more compact courtyard layouts. Premier Umalas 17 has two workspaces and a private pool for guests who want to work from both rooms; the Stylish and Modern pool townhouses in Sanur both pair two king bedrooms with a dedicated workspace and a private plunge pool. That’s a fairly consistent pattern at this size: two proper bedrooms, a private (if smaller) pool, and at least one workspace.

Some of our 2-bedroom Sanur villas — the Serenity 6.1 and 6.2 properties — share a pool and small garden with one neighbouring villa rather than being fully private. That’s worth asking about directly if pool exclusivity matters to you; it’s a genuine trade-off some guests are happy to make for a lower rate and others aren’t.

Shared versus fully private layouts

Layout type Typical trade-off Best for
Fully private pool and garden Higher rate, full exclusivity Couples, families wanting complete privacy
Shared pool/garden with one neighbour Lower rate, less exclusive outdoor space Budget-conscious guests, don’t mind neighbours
Apartment-style with private terrace No shared garden, more compact Couples prioritising location over outdoor space

We also manage a 2-bedroom apartment-style property, Serenity 10, with a private terrace rather than a garden — worth considering if you want your own outdoor space without the maintenance of a full villa garden setup.

Two friends sharing versus a couple with a guest room

These are different use cases even at the same bedroom count. Two friends splitting a villa usually want equal-sized rooms, each en-suite, with a fair pricing split in mind. A couple with an occasional guest room cares less about room equality and more about the second room being tucked away enough not to feel like it’s part of their own space. Say which situation applies when asking for availability — it changes which layout we’d point you to.

Areas: Canggu, Sanur and Umalas compared

Canggu’s 2-bedroom villas tend to sit closer to the surf and beach club scene, suiting couples or friends who want an active, social stay. Sanur’s 2-bedroom townhouses suit a calmer pace with a walkable beach promenade and are generally better value for the same bedroom count. Umalas sits between the two — quieter than Canggu, with cafés and coworking space nearby, good for a couple mixing remote work with downtime.

What to check before booking

  • Is the pool fully private or shared with a neighbouring villa?
  • Are both bedrooms en-suite, or is one bathroom shared?
  • Is there a dedicated workspace in each bedroom, or just one shared desk?
  • What’s the kitchen setup — full range, or lighter kitchenette?
  • Does the villa have a private entrance, or shared building access?

Cost versus a 1-bedroom

The jump from a 1-bedroom to a 2-bedroom villa is often smaller than people assume, especially outside peak season or on weekly/monthly bookings where the per-night difference narrows further. It’s worth pricing both directly rather than assuming the smaller option is automatically better value — a second bedroom you use even occasionally, for a guest or a separate workspace, can be worth a modest premium.

What to do next

Decide whether pool privacy and en-suite bathrooms matter enough to pay for, or whether a shared-pool layout at a lower rate suits your trip. That single decision narrows the options fastest.

  • State clearly whether you need full pool privacy when asking for availability.
  • Ask whether both bedrooms are en-suite if travelling as two separate couples or friends.
  • Compare the weekly rate against a 1-bedroom villa before assuming it costs much more.

Send your dates and group makeup through our villa rentals page and we’ll match you to the right layout from our Sanur, Canggu and Umalas villas.

Frequently asked questions

Do all 2-bedroom villas in Bali have a private pool?

Most do, but not all are fully exclusive — some share a pool and garden with one neighbouring villa. Always confirm exclusivity directly if it matters to your stay.

Is a 2-bedroom villa good for two couples travelling together?

It can work well if both bedrooms are en-suite with some separation between them. Ask specifically about bathroom setup and room layout before booking for two separate couples.

How much more does a 2-bedroom villa cost than a 1-bedroom?

It varies by area and season, but the gap is often smaller than expected, especially on weekly or monthly bookings. Compare both directly rather than assuming the smaller option is significantly cheaper.

Which area has the best 2-bedroom villas for remote work?

Umalas tends to suit remote workers best, with quieter surroundings and nearby cafés and coworking spaces, though several of our Sanur and Canggu 2-bedroom villas also include dedicated workspaces.

Can I get a discount booking a 2-bedroom villa directly with the manager?

Yes — direct bookings with us include 5% off any stay, 10% off weekly stays and 15% off monthly stays, with no OTA commission or booking fee added.
