Sanur beach is not a single beach but a roughly five-kilometre stretch of shoreline on Bali’s east coast, running from the harbour area in the north down past Sindhu, Segara and Mertasari in the south, connected by a flat, paved beachfront path. An offshore reef keeps the water calm, which is the defining feature that separates Sanur from the surf beaches on the west and south coasts.

Most of the path between these stretches is walkable or cyclable in well under an hour end to end, which makes it easy to explore more than one on foot during a stay.
Why the water is calm here
A coral reef sits a few hundred metres offshore along most of Sanur’s coastline, which breaks up incoming swell before it reaches the beach. That is why Sanur has a reputation as a calm, family-friendly beach rather than a surf destination — the trade-off is that serious surfers should look toward Canggu, Uluwatu or Kuta instead.
What the beachfront path offers
The paved path running the length of Sanur’s beach is one of its best features: shaded in sections, dotted with cafés, and genuinely usable for walking, jogging or cycling rather than just a decorative promenade. It is one of the few places in south Bali where a car or scooter is not the default way to get around for several kilometres at a stretch.

Sanur’s harbour is the main departure point for fast boats to Nusa Lembongan, Nusa Ceningan and Nusa Penida, making it a practical base if a Nusa Islands day trip or overnight is part of your plans. Boats typically run in the morning; book ahead in high season as popular departures fill up.
Tides and the best time to swim
Sanur’s beach changes noticeably with the tide — at low tide, wide sandbanks and shallow reef flats are exposed, which can leave very little water to actually swim in at some points along the shore, while high tide brings the water closer to the beachfront path and generally offers better swimming conditions. Checking a tide chart for the day, easily available online or from most villa hosts, makes a real difference to whether an afternoon at the beach involves swimming or mostly walking on exposed sand.
Facilities along the beach
Sun loungers, umbrellas and simple beachside warungs are dotted along most of the path, particularly near Sindhu and the central Segara stretch, so you rarely need to bring much beyond sun protection and a towel. Public toilets and showers are available at a few points but are not universal along the full five kilometres, so it is worth planning around the busier, more developed sections if that matters for your day.
