Best Area in Bali for Surfers

The best area in Bali for surfers is usually Canggu for beginners and intermediates, or the Bukit (Ungasan and Uluwatu) for more experienced surfers chasing reef breaks.

There is no single best area in Bali for surfers — the right base depends on your level and whether you want a beach break to learn on or a reef break to test yourself against. Canggu’s beach breaks (Batu Bolong, Echo Beach, Berawa) suit beginners and intermediates who want sand instead of coral underfoot. The Bukit peninsula, including Ungasan near Green Bowl and Balangan, and Uluwatu further along, has the reef breaks that draw more experienced surfers, plus a calmer, less crowded base to sleep in afterwards.

We manage villas in Canggu and Ungasan, so both ends of this trade-off are familiar territory, not marketing copy.

Match the break to your level first

Surf spots in Bali fall roughly into two categories, and picking the wrong one is the single biggest mistake visiting surfers make.

  • Beach breaks (sand bottom): Canggu’s Batu Bolong, Echo Beach and Berawa, plus Kuta and Legian further south. Forgiving if you fall, good for learning and for intermediate surfers building consistency. Crowded, especially at sunrise and sunset.
  • Reef breaks (coral bottom): Uluwatu, Padang Padang, Bingin, and Green Bowl and Balangan near Ungasan. Better waves for experienced surfers, but a fall means reef, not sand. Tide timing matters more here than at the beach breaks.

If you’re not sure which category you’re in, Canggu is the safer starting point. If you already surf regularly at home, the Bukit’s reef breaks are worth the extra planning.

Canggu: convenience over quality of wave

Canggu is the easiest base logistically. Boards for hire on every corner, surf schools at every skill level, and several breaks within a 10-minute scooter ride of each other, so a flat day at one spot doesn’t ruin your session. The waves themselves are good but not exceptional by Bali standards — plenty of intermediate surfers outgrow Canggu’s breaks after a season and start looking south.

Our Canggu villas sit a short ride from Berawa and Echo Beach, useful if you want to check conditions from the terrace before committing to the paddle out.

The Bukit (Ungasan and Uluwatu): better waves, more discipline required

The Bukit peninsula is where Bali’s reputation as a serious surf destination comes from. Near Ungasan, Green Bowl and Balangan are well-regarded, less crowded than the famous Uluwatu breaks further along the clifftop, and a genuinely different pace of life — quiet lanes, ocean views, and none of Canggu’s traffic. Our villas in Ungasan put you close to this stretch of coast without the price premium of staying right in Uluwatu itself.

The trade-off is access: many Bukit breaks require a walk down cliff stairs or paths, tide timing matters, and reef cuts are a real risk if you’re still building confidence. This is not the area to learn to surf; it’s the area to come once you already can.

What changes the calculus: skill level, group size and non-surfing plans

Factor Favours Canggu Favours Ungasan / Bukit
Skill level Beginner to intermediate Intermediate to advanced
Group with non-surfers Yes — cafés, shops, nightlife nearby Less so — quieter, fewer amenities
Priority Convenience, variety of breaks nearby Wave quality, fewer crowds
Evening plans Bars and beach clubs on the doorstep Quiet dinners, early nights before dawn sessions
Budget for boards/lessons Widest choice of schools and rentals Fewer options, book ahead

A realistic week for each type of surfer

If you’re learning: base in Canggu, book two or three lessons in the first days to get comfortable reading a beach break, and use the extra time to explore Berawa and Echo Beach on different tides.

If you already surf: base near Ungasan, check swell and wind forecasts the night before (conditions on the Bukit change fast with wind direction), and budget for cliff-path walks that add 15–20 minutes either side of a session.

What goes wrong that nobody warns you about

  • Booking a Canggu villa but wanting Bukit waves: the drive from Canggu to Uluwatu-area breaks is 45–75 minutes depending on traffic, which kills a dawn session plan. Base close to the breaks you actually intend to surf.
  • Underestimating reef breaks: reef cuts get infected fast in Bali’s heat and humidity. Reef boots and a first-aid kit are not optional on the Bukit.
  • Ignoring tide charts: several Bukit breaks are only surfable at certain tide stages. Canggu’s beach breaks are more forgiving on this front.

Surfers who also want nightlife within reach should read our best area in Bali for nightlife guide, since Canggu covers both needs at once; those weighing Ungasan specifically against its immediate neighbour should see Ungasan vs Uluwatu.

What to do next

Pick your area by matching your surfing level to the break type, not by which area photographs best. Beginners and intermediates get more sessions and less frustration in Canggu; confident surfers get better waves and a calmer base near Ungasan.

  • Tell us your surf level and we’ll suggest Canggu or Ungasan and the villas closest to the right breaks.
  • Check swell, wind and tide forecasts for your dates before booking lessons or board hire.
  • Browse villas for rent in Canggu and Ungasan to compare distance to the water.

Frequently asked questions

Is Canggu or Uluwatu better for surfing?

Canggu is better for learning and convenience — beach breaks, boards for hire everywhere, and short rides between spots. Uluwatu and the surrounding Bukit have higher-quality reef breaks that reward experienced surfers, but they demand more skill, tide awareness and reef safety. Pick based on your level, not reputation.

Can beginners surf near Ungasan?

Some Bukit breaks near Ungasan, like Green Bowl, are manageable for confident beginners on the right tide with a local guide, but most nearby breaks are reef-bottom and better suited to intermediate or advanced surfers. If you're just starting out, Canggu's beach breaks are the safer choice.

How far is Ungasan from the main Uluwatu surf breaks?

Roughly 15 to 25 minutes by scooter or car depending on traffic and the exact break, which is close enough for a dawn session without the price premium of staying directly in Uluwatu.

Do I need my own board or can I rent locally?

Rental is easy and cheap in both Canggu and near Ungasan, with boards for every level. Bringing your own board only makes sense if you have a specific shape you rely on; otherwise renting locally saves airline board fees and hassle.

Is Canggu too crowded to surf now?

The main breaks (Batu Bolong, Echo Beach) get busy at sunrise and sunset, especially in high season. Surfing mid-morning or mid-afternoon, or riding 10 minutes to a quieter break nearby, avoids most of the crowd.
