Where to Stay in Bali for a Week

For a one-week trip to Bali, staying in a single area is almost always the better plan. Seven nights is short enough that changing villas partway through eats a real chunk of your holiday in packing, transfers and settling in twice, for a variety benefit most people don’t actually use. Pick one base that matches your priorities — beaches, cafés, nightlife, family space — and take day trips from there instead.

The exception is a trip built specifically around seeing two different sides of the island, such as a few days on the coast plus a couple of nights in Ubud for temples and rice terraces. Even then, we’d suggest weighting it 5 nights to 2 rather than splitting evenly, so you’re not spending your week mostly in transit.

Picking one area for a week

Your choice should follow what you actually want to do most days, not which area photographs best.

• Sanur suits families, couples and anyone who wants a calm base with a flat beachfront path for walking or cycling, without heavy traffic or nightlife. It’s also a practical hub for day trips to Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Penida by fast boat.
• Canggu suits surfers, remote workers and anyone who wants cafés, coworking spaces and a beach walkable from the villa, accepting more traffic and a livelier evening scene in return.
• Umalas suits people who want Canggu’s café culture without being right in its busiest streets — quieter lanes, still a short drive to the beach and Seminyak.
• Ungasan suits couples and groups who want a private pool villa on the Bukit’s cliffs, with beach clubs and dramatic scenery a short drive away.

What a week actually costs to plan for

Villa rates vary by area, size and season, and we’d rather point you to check current pricing than quote a fixed number that goes stale. As a planning approach: decide your group size and bedroom count first, then compare a few villas in your chosen area at your actual dates, since the swing between low and high season is often larger than the swing between areas. Beyond the villa, budget for a scooter or car rental (or a driver on call), meals out most nights, and any day trips or activities. None of these costs are fixed enough to state as fact here — treat any number you see quoted elsewhere as a starting point, not a guarantee.

Booking and check-in logistics

Check-in is typically from 3:00 pm and check-out by 11:00 am, though early or late arrangements are often possible outside high season on request — worth asking when you book, especially for a late-night or early-morning flight. Common mistakes for a one-week trip

• Splitting the week across two or three villas. It looks appealing on paper but the actual time lost to transfers and re-settling is usually underestimated.
• Booking the wrong area for your group. A surf-focused Canggu base doesn’t suit a family wanting calm beach days, and vice versa — match the area to your actual plans, not the area’s general reputation.
• Underestimating drive times to day trips. Places like Ubud or the north coast take longer than they look on a map; build in buffer rather than a tight schedule.
• Not asking about early check-in or late check-out. Many villas can accommodate this outside peak season if you simply ask ahead.

Villa size and layout for a week-long group

Bedroom count matters as much as area for a short, intense stay. A group of six splitting a 2-bedroom villa will feel cramped fast over a full week, while a couple in a 4-bedroom villa is paying for space they won’t use. Bali’s wet and dry seasons both bring workable weather for a week-long stay, but they suit different itineraries. Drier months generally mean more reliable outdoor plans — beach days, day trips, sunset beach clubs — without needing a backup plan. Wetter months bring short, often heavy downpours rather than constant rain, so a week during this period usually still has plenty of good weather, just with less certainty about which specific days. If your week is built around one outdoor priority — a boat trip to Nusa Penida, a sunrise trek — building in a spare day as a weather buffer is worth considering regardless of season.

Adjusting the plan for a couple vs a family vs a group

A one-week trip looks different depending on who’s travelling. A couple can move faster and more spontaneously, fitting in a beach club afternoon or a last-minute dinner booking without much coordination. A family with young kids generally needs a slower pace, shorter days out and a villa with enough downtime space that nobody is climbing the walls by day four. A larger group renting a bigger villa often does best building in a rotation of who plans what for the day, rather than trying to agree on every activity as one unit, which can eat into time better spent relaxing.

Meals: cooking in vs eating out

A week-long stay is long enough that a mix of home-cooked and restaurant meals usually works better than eating out every night, both for budget and for pace. Most of our villas come with a fully equipped kitchen, so stocking up at a local supermarket on arrival for breakfasts and the odd home-cooked dinner is worth considering, especially with children or a larger group.
